The Plaza Athénée Nobu Hotel & Spa Bangkok

Meir Teper

The Plaza Athénée Nobu Hotel & Spa Bangkok is opening in Bangkok, Thailand, in 2027, inside the East Asiatic Building on the banks of the Chao Phraya River. The Italian architect Annibale Rigotti designed the building around 1900 as a Renaissance Revival headquarters, three storeys of pale stucco with arched loggias that open towards the water. It stands directly beside the Mandarin Oriental and for more than a century has been one of the most photographed facades on the river. Nobu Hospitality is turning it into a hotel under its Plaza Athénée brand. The number of rooms has not yet been published, though the building's scale points to an intimate house rather than a grand one.

The defining view will be the one from the water. The arcades face the Chao Phraya, where long-tail boats and ferries pass all day and the lights of the riverside hotels come on at dusk. Inside, Nobu plans to keep the historic structure while bringing in the pared-back style of the brand, with a spa and restaurants that pair Japanese and Western ideas.

The building has a long commercial past. The East Asiatic Company was founded in 1884 by the Danish sea captain Hans Niels Andersen and ran its Siam trade from this address until 1995. That year the building was sold to the group of Thai businessman Charoen Sirivadhanabhakdi. It later became an event space and film location, and in 1984 it received a conservation award from the Association of Siamese Architects.

Today it belongs to Asset World Corporation, the Sirivadhanabhakdi family's hospitality company, which is developing the hotel with Nobu Hospitality, founded by chef Nobu Matsuhisa, Robert De Niro and Meir Teper.
